I’ve been meaning to write this guide for quite some time now. A few years perhaps. Following the recent completion of the Record Champion restoration project, I thought it was time to get this guide written.

About 18 months ago I started work on a rough and broken Record Champion air pistol. These air pistols are quite rare and very unique and so are very worthy of restoration and repair. Not only do they have a concentric oval piston and seal, but they are also side-lever cocking with a twelve-shot stick magazine that slides into the grip. Additionally, it has an adjustable two-stage trigger and a dovetail rail on which you could fit a pistol scope! How’s that for a feature-packed spring powered air pistol?

In this article, for a change from writing historical pieces, I am going to write a guide that details how to disassemble a Record Jumbo. Why the change Jimmie? Well, I bought this pistol rather cheaply at a bring and buy sale some years ago. Bargain it was or so I thought. When I got it home when I soon realised it wasn’t such a good deal. It would not fire a pellet at all….

The FB Record Champion! The only “stick” magazine-fed spring-powered air pistol ever manufactured! What’s more, just like the Record Jumbo, it’s a concentric design with an oval piston. To top it off, it’s also side-lever cocking, has a two-stage trigger, adjustable sights and has a dovetail rail so that a pistol scope can be fitted!

This is the FB Record Jumbo, standard model. It was manufactured in West Germany from 1982 to circa 1997. The standard model has chequered walnut grips and fixed sights. On the other hand, the “deluxe” model usually has smooth curved walnut grips and an adjustable rear sight. There is at least one deluxe model that is known to have carved oak-leaf pattern grips.

The FB Record LP77 was made by Fritz Barthelmes in 1977 in West Germany. They are still available to buy new today.
Until next time, happy shooting!

FB Record LP2 (1967 onwards)

The FB Record LP2 was manufactured by Fritz Barthelmes KG, West Germany in 1967. It is still in production today. The interesting part of this air pistol is the barrel spring catch which is on the right-hand side of the barrel. Normally the catch is found underneath the barrel on most break-barrel air guns.

FB Record LP1 (1967 onwards)

Another new addition to the collection – it’s been a busy month! This time it’s an FB Record LP1. Well, actually two of them. I hedged my bets at a closed auction and won both of them! Despite still being available to buy new in Europe you don’t see them come up for sale very often in the UK. They are not available in the US as they do not have a safety catch. The compression tube is blued and in remarkable condition, whereas the barrel has developed quite a patina. Both pistols were complete with box and instruction manuals. Unfortunately, the boxes had their ends severed through use and wear. Luckily all the ends were supplied and I have managed to restore the boxes (see this article).
Until next time, happy shooting!

FB Record Jumbo “Deluxe” (1983 to c. 1997)

The FB Record Jumbo “Deluxe”. Manufactured in West Germany from 1983 to circa 1997. The only difference between the deluxe model and the standard Jumbo is that it has an adjustable rear sight and usually smooth walnut grips. The standard Jumbo had chequered walnut grips. Some deluxe models may have had oak leaf carved grips.
